Renowned science author Timothy Ferris approached kapow to create a companion website for PBS which would highlight his documentary on amateur astronomy. Based on his 2002 book of the same name, Seeing in the Dark is a film in which "stargazers try to describe an ineffable experience, and invite viewers to share their wordless awe." The design of the website echoes this sentiment, with several interactive features that allow visitors to glimpse views of the night sky and celestial bodies that they would not usually be able to access.

Site features include:

  • Interactive digital star charts that can be customized for users' date and location.
  • An internet telescope that allows users to request images of star clusters, galaxies and nebulae in the northern sky.
  • A list of birthday stars, enabling visitors to locate a star whose light left on its way to earth in the year that they were born.
  • A wide range of essays on astronomy topics.
  • An astrophotography gallery featuring breath-taking imagery.
  • Assistance for new amateur astronomers, including observation guides and how-to videos.
  • Extensive interview footage with Timothy Ferris
  • A resources & links section that leads visitors to other astronomy websites, as well as providing lists of books and publications.
